How many types of valves are there between the water intake pump station and the faucet in your home?

Tap water flows steadily and cleanly from reservoirs or major rivers and streams dozens of kilometers away through a complex network of underground pipes to your home’s faucet—a process that is, in fact, a precise “fluid symphony.” Water treatment plants focus on two core aspects of water management: controlling “quality” (purifying the water) and controlling “pressure and flow” (ensuring a steady supply to homes).

  1. Water Intake: Intake Pump Station (Large-Flow Control)
It all begins at the intake head in rivers, lakes, or reservoirs.

Bar Screens and Gate Valves:At the water source intake, coarse and fine bar screens first block large debris such as branches and plastic bags. Here, huge gate valves are used. They are normally fully open to allow large-flow water intake; they are only closed tightly during dredging or equipment maintenance.

Intake Pumps:Powerful centrifugal pumps "suck" the river water in, raise it to a higher elevation, and send it into the raw water pipeline to the water treatment plant.

  2. Water Purification: Reaction and Sedimentation (Precise Micro-Dosing Control)
After the raw water enters the treatment plant, the real art of "water control" lies in the precise micro-dosing of chemicals.

Precise Chemical Dosing (Metering Pumps and Needle Valves):The sediment particles in the water are very small and will not settle naturally. The plant injects a coagulant (such as polyaluminum chloride). This process requires extremely high dosing accuracy, so high-precision needle valves or metering pumps are used, dosing as precisely as with a dropper.

Grid Flocculation Basin:The water flows through specially shaped baffles or grids, creating small eddies that make the chemicals and sediment particles collide and bind fully, forming "flocs" like snowflakes.

Horizontal Sedimentation Basin:The water containing flocs flows into a wide, gentle sedimentation basin. The flow velocity drops instantly, the heavy flocs settle to the bottom and are removed by sludge scrapers, and the clear supernatant overflows from the weir at the top of the basin.

  3. Filtration and Disinfection: V-Type Filter and Contact Tank (Direction and Flow Control)
After sedimentation, the water still contains fine suspended solids and must pass through a quartz sand filter layer.

V-Type Filter (Where Butterfly Valves Shine):During filtration, water passes through the sand layer from top to bottom. Over time, the sand layer becomes clogged and requires "backwashing" (reverse flushing of the sand layer with high-pressure water and air). A large number of electric/pneumatic butterfly valves are used here because butterfly valves respond quickly and are compact, allowing rapid switching between the "filtration" and "backwash" pipeline modes.

Disinfection Contact Tank:After filtration, sodium hypochlorite or liquid chlorine is added to the water for disinfection and sterilization. The water flows through a winding contact tank like a "maze" to ensure sufficient contact time between the water and the disinfectant (usually no less than 30 minutes).

  4. Water Delivery: Clear Water Tank and Booster Pump Station (Pressure and Safety Control)
The disinfected water enters the clear water tank (the giant reservoir at the water plant). This is the eve of the tap water truly "leaving the factory."

Variable-Frequency Secondary Pump Station:Pumps press the water from the clear water tank into the city's main pipe network. Because the city's electricity and water consumption changes at any time (for example, high water consumption during morning and evening peaks, low consumption late at night), the delivery pumps use variable-frequency regulation to increase or decrease speed as needed.

Check Valve: A check valve must be installed at the pump outlet. If there is a sudden power outage, the water in the high-pressure pipe will flow back violently (water hammer effect). The check valve can instantly seal in one direction, protecting the pump from being destroyed by the reverse flow.

Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV): The urban pipe network is intricate, and the pressure requirements of high-rise buildings and low-lying areas are completely different. Automatic pressure reducing valves are installed at network nodes to reduce the high pressure of hundreds of meters of head to a safe range and prevent pipes from bursting.

  5. To Home: Household Control (End Point and Metering)
When the water reaches the ground floor of your home:

High-Rise Secondary Water Supply:The water pressure on the top floors of super high-rise buildings is insufficient, so a secondary water supply pump tank is usually built in the basement of the residential compound to pressurize the water again and send it upstairs.
